Getting started

For MacOS 9 start you must launch:

SheepShaver.exe (Windows) / SheepShaver (MacOS X)

If you have problems with emulator launch, type this (thanks to mrc333777):

SheepShaver.exe SheepShaver_prefs (Windows)
SheepShaver SheepShaver_prefs (MacOS)

Under the Windows operating system SheepShaver can’t find this file:

C:\Windows\system32\drivers\cdenable.sys

Download file cdenable.sys

For correctly working CD-ROM/DVD-ROM you need to replace in the file SheepShaver_prefs (it’s located in main directory):

cdrom J:\

a drive letter on the correct letter of your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive.

Great find! It was fun playing around with Mac OS 9 on Snow Leopard. Funny how the Internet has changed after viewing it in Internet Explorer 4.5.

    1. radioskip says:

Hi Richard how did you get this to work exactly, the instructions on this webpage here are not exactly clear. I am using an iMac 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with OS X 10.5.8. I can launch The Sheepshaver GUI but again get the flashing grey disk image.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really want this to work!

  2. Becca says:

I’m having trouble getting this to work…when I run the program, I get a grey screen with a floppy disk with a question mark in it. Suggestions?

    1. Vladimir Gromadin says:

Did you try all stuff from the “Getting started” section?
Which OS are you using? Maybe you have an unusual configuration and need to edit manually SheepShaver_prefs file.

It’s tested under Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista 64bit and MacOS X.

  3. kinhodder says:

I can’t get it to work either. When I click SheepShaver, or SheepShaverGUI, to launch… nothing happens. When I say nothing happened, I mean nothing at all – no error messages, and nothing in Activity Monitor, or my logs to do with SheepShaver.

I tried “SheepShaver SheepShaver_prefs” and “SheepShaverGUI SheepShaver_prefs” from within the MacOS9.0.4 directory, and got a ‘command not found’ error. ‘open SheepShaver.app’ doesn’t work, either.

    I’m running OS 10.6.2.

    Any ideas?

    1. Vladimir Gromadin says:

Hm… Maybe you need to download the latest version of SheepShaver and replace the included files. You can download it from here.

      [sorry, I can't test on 10.6 right now, I'm on 10.5...]

  4. radioskip says:

Vladimir, I have tried all of the above and have the same problems running this on an iMac 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with OS X 10.5.8, can you give us any more advice?

When you say “If you have problems with emulator launch, type SheepShaver SheepShaver_prefs (MacOS)” where do we exactly type this? I have downloaded the latest Sheepshaver files and replaced them in the folder too.

    Please help!

    1. Vladimir Gromadin says:

You must open your terminal program in a directory with SheepShaver. Then you must type the name of your SheepShaver file and (after space) the name of the preferences file (it must be from my archive).

If you still have problems, you maybe need to check the SheepShaver preferences file and to change it according to your configuration… Maybe you need absolute paths..
