Getting started

For MacOS 9 start you must launch:

SheepShaver.exe (Windows) / SheepShaver (MacOS X)

If you have problems with emulator launch, type this (thanks to mrc333777):

SheepShaver.exe SheepShaver_prefs (Windows)
SheepShaver SheepShaver_prefs (MacOS)

Under the Windows operating system SheepShaver can’t find this file:

C:\Windows\system32\drivers\cdenable.sys

Download file cdenable.sys

For correctly working CD-ROM/DVD-ROM you need to replace in the file SheepShaver_prefs (it’s located in main directory):

cdrom J:\

a drive letter on the correct letter of your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive.

Great find! It was fun playing around with Mac OS 9 on Snow Leopard. Funny how the Internet has changed after viewing it in Internet Explorer 4.5.

    1. radioskip says:

Hi Richard how did you get this to work exactly, the instructions on this webpage here are not exactly clear. I am using an iMac 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with OS X 10.5.8. I can launch The Sheepshaver GUI but again get the flashing grey disk image.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really want this to work!

  2. kinhodder says:

I can’t get it to work either. When I click SheepShaver, or SheepShaverGUI, to launch… nothing happens. When I say nothing happened, I mean nothing at all – no error messages, and nothing in Activity Monitor, or my logs to do with SheepShaver.

I tried “SheepShaver SheepShaver_prefs” and “SheepShaverGUI SheepShaver_prefs” from within the MacOS9.0.4 directory, and got a ‘command not found’ error. ‘open SheepShaver.app’ doesn’t work, either.

    I’m running OS 10.6.2.

    Any ideas?

    1. Vladimir Gromadin says:

Hm… Maybe you need to download the latest version of SheepShaver and replace the included files. You can download it from here.

      [sorry, I can't test on 10.6 right now, I'm on 10.5...]

  3. radioskip says:

Vladimir, I have tried all of the above and have the same problems running this on an iMac 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with OS X 10.5.8, can you give us any more advice?

When you say “If you have problems with emulator launch, type SheepShaver SheepShaver_prefs (MacOS)” where do we exactly type this? I have downloaded the latest Sheepshaver files and replaced them in the folder too.

    Please help!

    1. Vladimir Gromadin says:

You must open your terminal program in a directory with SheepShaver. Then you must type the name of your SheepShaver file and (after space) the name of the preferences file (it must be from my archive).

If you still have problems, you maybe need to check the SheepShaver preferences file and to change it according to your configuration… Maybe you need absolute paths..

  4. hello says:

how do you run this in a 64 bit copy of windows 7?

    1. Vladimir Gromadin says:

In a compatibility mode; I don’t try it on Windows 7 but it works under Windows Vista 64 bit. If it’s still impossible you may start it inside the XP virtual machine (it’s included in Windows 7).

  5. Jan says:

You’re using 7zip to distribute MacOS apps? This … isn’t a really good idea, as 7z can’t deal with Unix permissions.

You can fix the permissions problems from the terminal as follows:

    chmod 755 SheepShaverGUI.app/Contents/MacOS/SheepShaverGUI
    chmod 755 SheepShaver.app/Contents/MacOS/SheepShaver

  6. Rob says:

Thanks a lot .. i changed the CD drive in the prefs file to what it is.. that did the trick for getting it loaded up. Really cool!

  7. Jamie says:

I got it running in Windows 7 x64 once I edited the prefs file to find my DVD drive, but when I launch the .exe I get an error saying the CD-ROM driver is not in the drivers folder (even though it is), and when it runs it can’t find the CD.

This is really a minor problem, as I don’t need to use CDs. However, how can I copy other software to the disk image? I have some old applications I need to run so I can open some old documents…

    Thanks for the great work!

    Hi

nice image with lots of add-ons and software…I’ve installed finderpop and prestissimo.
How come I can’t increase memory? I’ve set up sheepshavergui.exe (with the gtk runtime environment) but about anything can be customized except memory. You can decrease it but any value above 128 generates an error message “can’t map memory, no error” ???
    I’m on Win7, 64 bits…help welcome…

  13. Abe says:

    IN OS X 10.6.x -
Once you download the new version of shapershifter from http://www.xs4all.nl/~ronaldpr/sheepshaverforum/SheepShaver_Lion_test2.zip extract and put in the same directory as other files (replacing earlier shapeshifter file), rename the “MacROM” file to “Mac OS ROM” and it starts ^_^

  14. Vladimir Gromadin says:

Did you try all stuff from the “Getting started” section?
Which OS are you using? Maybe you have an unusual configuration and need to edit manually SheepShaver_prefs file.

It’s tested under Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista 64bit and MacOS X.
